For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Robert Ross, the project manager and co-owner of Buzz & Bites. The idea behind Buzz & Bites came from them wanting to be able to be the pick me up that someone may need during the day, whether that be a cup of coffee or something to eat. Hence where the inspiration for their name came from.

Something else that Buzz & Bites holds very highly and is very important to them is making sure that every customer gets a quality product. For this reason, they partnered with Katz coffee who not only brings a great product, but it also is organic and is certified in Fair Trade dealings. They also like to incorporate as much fresh and organic food into their “bites” as possible. They locally source their bread and try to purchase as much local produce as possible so that everything they serve is the best it can be for their customers.

For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Shayn Robinson, the co-owner of New Magnolia Brewing Company. New Magnolia got their start a year ago on November 22nd and have been cranking out craft beers ever since. If you ever wanted some variety with your beers, this is your place!

New Magnolia entered a market already flush with local craft beers but quickly differentiated themselves based on the wide variety of beers that they offered to the public. They aren’t afraid to go out of their comfort zone and try a different brew whether it be a sour or a porter or even a more obscure style of brewing just to experiment and see what works. They operate as a brew pub which means that they serve their beer in the same building that they brew their beer in which also means that the beer you are getting is the freshest and highest quality.

For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Emmanuel Chavez, the chef and owner of Tatemo. Tatemo originally began as a food concept that was going to focus on maíz and really highlighting that through the dishes, but due to the pandemic they quickly switched and became a tortilleria and molineria and have found tremendous success through these ventures.

One of the big things that is important to Tatemo is focusing on the quality of the maíz and doing everything from scratch so that the product that is produced is one that really lets the complexity and flavors shine through. They also want to restore the cultural value of maíz as well as how much value it can bring to you nutritionally by showcasing the diversity of the heirloom corn that they use. The technique that they use to prepare their corn is one that really represents Mexican culture and its traditional cuisine and that was something very important to Tatemo’s mission.

For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Ron and Kristina Tucker, the owners and winemakers at Decant Urban Winery. The Winery opened back in February of 2019 in a spot in the Garden Oaks neighborhood near the Houston Heights. It was an ideal spot for Ron and Kristina to open a winery in as several breweries had either opened or had plans to open in the area, making it a one stop area for a lot of customers and visitors looking to enjoy a drink.

When visiting Decant, it’s hard to believe that they building they’re in used to be an old run down auto body shop. They bought the property back in July of 2017 and although they were able to start making their wines, at the time it was hard to get the correct permits to open a tasting room. They sold their wines locally for a while and then eventually decided to make a small tasting lounge in a converted part of office space. They do have plans on continuing construction to make a larger tasting space for the public to enjoy.

For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Vincent Campos, the general manager of Hearsay Market Square. Hearsay opened back in 2009 and has been a staple of downtown cuisine and cocktail lounges ever since. They are housed in one of Houston’s oldest buildings and even got their name from the surrounding law firms so they truly are rooted in the area they are in.

The “Hearsay Experience” revolves around their focus to serve sophisticated fine dining in a laid back and casual atmosphere. They like taking American classics and giving a sophisticated spin to them by using high-end products and ingredients. As far as their cocktail offerings go, they like to think of it as a modern twist on vintage speakeasy style drinks. They designed their drink menu to offer a variety of flavor profiles with something for every different palette and preference.

For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Sammy Mongonia, one of the coaches at Revolution Dojo. Revolution Dojo is a gym that offers martial arts classes such as Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, Kickboxing and MMA to adults and children of Houston alike. They pride themselves in offering a service that will help you achieve your martial arts goals no matter what they may be.

Sammy “The Bull” Mongonia actually started just as a patron of Revolution Dojo and eventually found out that they were looking for a new addition to their team. He fit that role perfectly and started working as a coach. He also still is an active fighter with them and has participated in over 50 fights, taking the victory in 44 of them.

On top of offering an amazing array of martial arts classes to help adults achieve whatever goals they have put forth, Revolution Dojo also offers fantastic kids programs. Brightside Coffee Bar was started because the owner, JJ, has always had a passion for coffee and he wanted to venture out and start something of his own to be able to bring quality products to his customers. They focus on only using the best products and the best coffee to ensure that every drink that goes out is the highest of quality drinks. Their future hope is to gain enough of a following so that they would be able to open a permanent brick and mortar store to serve their coffee out of. For this week’s #NeighborhoodSpotlight, join us as we meet with Dave Ohmer, general manager and brewer at Urban South Brewery HTX. Urban South has been a staple brewery in New Orleans since 2016 but has only been open in Houston since February. Their Houston taproom serves as a way for them to really get creative and adventurous with their beers and see how the public reacts.

The main inspiration behind Urban South Brewery came from when the founder visited Europe and tasted their beers. He realized that he had been missing beer of this quality when he was in South Louisiana and wanted to bring this kind of beer back to the United States. They aim to combine the heritage of European beer making with the brashness of new American styles. The Houston taproom really serves as an R&D facility where they really push the boundaries of American beer and see what turns out to be a hit.
